Garden trends may come and go, but classic styles endure

The cottage is a stunning Muskoka classic, an island property with lush window boxes and planters surrounding deep, shaded verandas. It’s a place that invites you to just sit and watch the hummingbirds and honeybees in the perennial gardens.

These gardens have a great deal to teach modern landscapers about blending tradition and modern trends. “Many of the things we’re doing now would have been very familiar to the gardeners who worked here 120 years ago,” says Jacki Hart, the founder of Water’s Edge Landscaping.

The team at Water’s Edge has been tending this cottage for more than 20 years. “There are gardens here that I’ve rebuilt and replanted many times over,” Jacki says. “And there are other features that I wouldn’t dream of touching, because the owner and I agree they’re absolutely perfect.”

Something similar is happening at Water’s Edge, she adds, which is going through its most profound transformation in the company’s 25 year history.
